it's almost that time of year

scale.jpgNewsflash: Mothers are required to take their children to neighborhood pools in the summer. If you want to be a good mother, you must do this. It's part of the mommy code. And my fear of failure in the area of motherhood requires that I play by these unwritten mommy rules.

But the thought of my pale white flesh hanging out of a swimsuit in a matter of mere weeks has set me into a frenzy. You see, it was a long, cold winter here in Colorado. I was forced to pack on extra fat to keep warm. Plus, the act of eating cookies, cupcakes, and chocolate kept me from noticing the snow in the yard. Yes, I am a master of distraction. But I think I might have overdone it a bit. Lily poked my stomach this week and said, "Mommy, you are a little bit fat. Do you have a baby in your tummy?" That was a delightful day.

So because I tend to swing towards obsessive compulsive disorder extreme discipline, I went a little crazy. I cut out all dairy, meat, processed sugars and all white flour. Basically I eat seeds and berries. Just kidding! But my choices are really limited.

My kids laughed when I told them I was not eating meat, but when they heard I was giving up sugar, panic struck their poor little souls. Their minds flashed back to other times I cut out sugar. Let's just say the sugar-withdrawl period is not pretty, my friend. The first few days without sugar one can be a tad on edge. Plus whenever I try healthy eating, I secretly start replacing their favorite foods with healthy alternatives. Unfortunately, the soy cheese gave me away and now they are on to me.

Anyway, here I go again. I've been doing it for a week now and have already lost 4 pounds. But more than that, I feel better. I think I'll stick to this for a while. Anyone else up for trying this with me?

I'm right there with you, Michelle. David and I both started a "healthy eating plan" last week. We're doing low sugar/low carb/low fat/low calorie....you get the idea.

I just want a big piece of chocolate cheesecake. ;)

I'm with you in spirit...but my flesh is weak (along with my self-discipline) so send the kids down if they need a sugar fix. Jordan actually measured me with a measuring tape today and said my bottom was 48 pounds. Her measuring units may not correspond with her measuring utensil...but she's probably not that far off!

Hi Michelle! I don't know if you remember me....I met you once or twice with Beth Hasz. Anyways, I saw your blog and was encouraged! I just started a cleanse today. Yes the health benefits are part of the reason I chose to do it but the pool time did have a little more "weight" in my decision!
I have cut out all sugar, dairy, white flour, and even most fruit. Into my second meal I was ready to quit!! The lack of sugar thing does weird things to a person's mind! I assume I should probably throw in some exercise as well but that might be pushing it a little too far! SO...count me in! I just hope I can finish!

I have totally stalked your blog forever now. Never commented...don't know why. But, I just had my fourth baby in four years and I am doing it too...got 45 lbs. to lose to be quite honest. 4 of them are gone already. So, I'm with you too. I've done the no sugar, no meat, etc. thing before too, but it's funny...different things work for me each time. I'm doing the Weight Watchers thing this time (how I lost the weight after baby #2)...that way I can have my blessed sugar if I want.

Anyway, good luck to you. Keep us posted. And love your blog...have for a long time.

I once heard a quote, "Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels." For me it has rang true when I am able to go swim suite shopping and not be depressed or slide into my favorite jeans without having the dreaded muffin top appear! But sometimes temptation gets the best of me and when I finish my sugary treat, I hear those words and feel even more guilty!

Ok, I just happened upon your blog via another. I am beginning my third week of this eating healthier to get rid of the muffin top thing. I am counting calories and it seems to make a huge difference. My kids will expect to be at that pool several times a week. Nothing makes you want to eat better than the thought of all the other mom's checking you out in your suit.

Good God, no! I won't be going down this path with you, but best of wishes as you get in tip-top shape while I do my best with maternity cover-ups at the pool this summer. There's nothing more depressing than wishing you were thinner, but realizing you'll be packing on 30 lbs wether you eat well or not. So, bring on the refined sugar!

Email me if you feel like doing something this weekend. I'll be braving the unfamiliar Downtown, while Ryan attends a conference. I'm definitely open to suggestions.

Tan fat always looks better than white fat. So I just started using the Jergens natural glow lotion, and it is fabulous! And congrats on the 4 lbs! And Wendy, calorie counting is the only thing that works for me.

Okay I did not even know you were back. I thought you were gone for good so I stopped checking...I know better now.

So I was playing catch up and I love that this post came after the Pancake Pantry post. hee!

Did you pull out the Marilu Henner cookbooks (love the lentil tacos)? Okay I recently saw her on the Tonight Show (we get Jay on the weekends)....now she was inspiration. 58 and she looks fab!!!

I thought you were gone for good too.

ok--so 280 lbs?? for real? Cuz you hide it very well (hhahaha--refering to the photo of the scale).

I'm not planning on kicking sugar or meat, but thanks for the offer. I'm just going to tow around my excess stomach blubber and say to heck with it! Even though I don't like it. Oh well!
